This work is based on the historic wood carvings produced by the Gallagher family, known for their traditional "Cigar Store Indian" figures - a widely recognized symbol of American visual culture and Western commercial history. Originally created as advertisements for tobacco shops, these carvings have since become iconic artifacts of Americana. By translating these three dimensional sculptures into two-dimensional paintings, the work explores the relationship between sculpture and painting, transforming objects of physical presence into images shaped by light, surface, and interpretation.
